Our Mission

The Connecticut Center for a New Economy (CCNE) is organizing a broad-based social movement to forge a new Social Contract for ordinary working people in the new service economy.  Through grassroots organizing and advocacy, we are working for change that will give the working poor a chance to share in the fruits of prosperity—through good jobs, access to health care, educational opportunity, and the chance to live with the dignity and security they should earn by their immense contribution to our state’s economy.

With the social contract as our framework, we will continue to meet with religious, community, labor, environmental, neighborhood organizations and individuals throughout New Haven to collect ideas on how New Haven’s economy can work for all residents. An important part of this citywide conversation will be our Civic Engagement Project, which will be a door-to-door outreach strategy, through which CCNE’s organizers and volunteers will collect information for the Economic Blueprint, and register what we are calling “community issue voters”.

Summer Interns Survey City and Register Voters

This past June and July, CCNE ran a summer internship program with six high school and college age students looking to get involved in community organizing in New Haven. For 8 weeks, our interns went door-to-door conducting surveys to gather input for the Economic Blueprint Project, identify leaders and register new voters in every neighborhood in the city. Accompanied by CCNE staff and volunteers, our interns engaged over 300 New Haven residents and registered dozens of new voters. In addition, our staff trained interns for two hours a week in canvassing and organizing skills and led educational seminars to help them locate their work within a national context.
